Thursdays Rocks @ Detox

Pretty good lineup at Detox tonight... Missing Dave, along with The Malcognitas, Busekrus, Supersonic Space Monkeys, Grand Theft Audio and Shawn Davenport.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday; $5 cover for everyone 16-and-up.

The Love Oven @ NextDoor

NextDoor is on point these days... lots of fun stuff going on there almost every day of the week.

I was just there on Wednesday for the old school hip-hop edition of Acid Wash Wednesday, and I'm contemplating going back for the debut of The Love Oven on Thursday.

Here's a little something that NextDoor's Lacy Matsumoto wrote about the new party:

The former Roots Juice party held at Big City Diner was a fusion between mainstream, old school, underground, and scensters. Holding the same consistancy of good entertainment, fresh new faces in the crowd, and an exciting sex appeal, this party has not changed anything but the name and the location. Kicking off the first party is Jennifer Johns, this bad ass soulful feamle vocalist is the perfect way to share the love. As the new weekly at Next Door this party is expected the maintain its high standards, and combine all groups of people in the 'LOVE OVEN'.

Doors open at 9 p.m. on Thursday, and there's no cover before 10 p.m.

Groundation @ Pipeline Cafe

California Reggae Band Groundation returns to Honolulu on Thursday, in support of their latest album, "Upon the Bridge." The concert is at Pipeline Cafe.

From the band's website:

It is said that if you don't know your past, you don't know your future; well Groundation knows its past, and they're stepping into the future. While capturing the essence of true roots reggae, internationally renowned, Groundation aims to take the genre to a new height by blending elements of both jazz and dub in their sound.

The name 'Groundation' came from trying to get everyone on the same level so people can talk and feel free to educate each other and learn from each other, and not come from a hierarchy or some type of leveled class situation. Groundation was founded in the fall of 1998 when three long time musicians Marcus Urani, Ryan Newman, and Harrison Stafford came together to form the core of the pioneering sound. They were later Joined in 2000 by San Francisco based Jazz trumpeter David Chachere and the North Bay’s Kelsey Howard on trombone. Groundation saxophonist Jason Robinson has gone on to become the head of the Jazz program at UC San Diego as well as breathing new life into the Southern California Jazz scene. Drummer Paul Spina (Les Claypool, Will Bernard’s Mother Bug) has been with the group since taking over from original set player James Stafford in December 2001.

And now you know. And knowing is half the battle!

Kairoots CD Release Party @ Pipeline

Forgot to post this last night... local band Kairoots is holding a CD release party in honor of their latest album, "King Soul," tonight at Pipeline Cafe.

Linus the Band and Kauai's Johnny Five will open things up, and there will be prize giveaways all night. The grand prize is a hand-shaped surfboard by Glenn Minami.

Doors open at 7 p.m. There's a $10 cover charge at the door.

Snoop Dogg Arrested... AGAIN

Damn... three arrests in as many months? Snoop's latest run-in with the police happened yesterday, right after the rapper finished taping an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Now I know Snoop has a new album out and everything, but three arrests is a little overboard... even for a gangsta like him.

Dude can't keep getting caught ridin' dirrrty! Maybe he should just roll in a different whip than the homies...

Natural Vibrations @ The O Lounge

Reggae fans, it doesn't get much better than this... Natural Vibrations performing live, $3 drinks all night long and no dress code!

Vertical Junkies, Stone Groove Family and Bay VI host the 18-and-over weekly that has its roots in the old "$5 Pitchas and Rubba Slippas" party, when it was at Hard Rock Cafe on Friday nights a few summers ago.

Besides the live music, this week's party will also play host to a video premiere of "Slipping Jet Streams," by Taylor Steele and Dustin Humphrey and will serve as a benefit for the Surfrider Foundation.

Acid Wash Wednesdays @ NextDoor

Acid Wash Wednesdays have been transporting folks back to the 80's for a few months now, but this is the first time the weekly industry night has decided to focus on the good ol' boom bap that came long before the hip-pop stuff you hear on MTV today.

And big up to Vegas Mike, one of the main folks behind this year's success at NextDoor. He'll be leaving the islands for Los Angeles next year, so be sure to stop in and check out a set of his before it's too late.

Weekend Recap

It's not the best video, but that's a short clip of Jurassic 5's DJ Nu-Mark from my vantage point onstage at Pipeline on Saturday.

As with most hip-hop shows, fans had to wait until after midnight to see the actual performance... and J5 definitely didn't disappoint. They stayed until almost 2 a.m. before hanging out to sign autographs for a BUNCH of people who crowded the stage afterward.

Did you miss Friday's story about the group? Good thing it's on the Internet forever and ever and ever...

Back to that video I shot. At one point during the show, the rest of the group took a breather and Nu-Mark stepped out from behind the decks with a toy-like turntable that was plugged into the soundboard. Dude starts ABUSING that thing (in a good way), then puts it down to step up to a pair of Playskool toys that were plugged into another mixer, along with a beat machine.

What came next was just INSANE. The end of it is what you see above.

Here's another clip from YouTube... this was shot a couple of weeks ago in Cleaveland, OH:

Also... big up to the Tiki Entertainment family. I got to hang out at Panama Hattie's for a video shoot by Tiki artists Krystiles and Suga D. Good fun.

Soul Clap @ thirtyninehotel

As it says on the flyer... Pop yo Kalakaua at thirtyninehotel during "Soul Clap," the sleeper of all monthly parties right now despite the decent buzz it's gotten in print.

The Nocturnal Sound Krew's DJ Eskae is the brains behind this one, and this month's party features a guest set by DJ Jim Browskee.

Check out a mix he did here, via a link Eskae posted at Quadmag.com.

Pimpbot's 4th Annual Christmas Toga Party @ Detox

It's not even December yet, but that's not stopping local band Pimpbot from throwing its annual "Christmas Toga Party" at Detox.

Wear a toga to this 18+ party and you get in for $5. Cover is $7 if you're not dressed up.

YSAS and Hometown Heroes open.
